MY GOP Dream Team
Frank Allnutt

It was but a few minutes before the umteenth GOP Presidential Debate. The candidates squeezed into a tiny dressing room only steps away from the expansive, light-flooded and glittering stage where they would soon gather before the eyes of the world to once again face-off with one another in a TV show of one-upmanship.

Or, would it be different this time? For they were there to meet briefly with their invited guest, Tim Tebow.

Yes, Tim Tebow, the Florida Heisman Trophy winner and now promising rookie quarterback of the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.

He was given a cordial, but brief greeting by the candidates, for time was short.

Tim then did what he was invited to do: He joined the gathering circle of candidates, all of whom professed to be Christians.

There was silence, for this was a somber moment.

One looked at another and asked to be forgiven for harsh words uttered in public in contempt of him. Another confessed he had lied on the campaign trail. Still another, with tears streaming, admitted to bearing false witness against his chief rival in the campaign.

The candidates broke from the circle to hug one another, and a few were heard to softly utter, “I forgive you.”

Then, regrouping in a circle, all joined hands. With heads bowed, the candidates, one at a time, prayed.

To a person they prayed for America. And for each other. Even for the opposing party.

One prayed: “Every one of us believes You have called us to run for the Office of the President, and we are giving our all to win the GOP nomination. Yet, we do not seek our will, but Your’s.”

Another followed by praying: “Our hearts are in agreement that we will support the one You choose to be our party’s nominee.”

“Yes,” one of the others followed in prayer: “We acknowledge before You that we are members of the same team. We’re Republicans. We’re Americans. More than that, we are Christians—brethren in Christ. And we pray that Your will be done throughout this campaign, by our next President, and throughout this land.”

Then I was roused with a start from my Sunday afternoon nap on the recliner. The TV was blaring sights and sounds of a packed and rollicking football stadium.

I woke up just in time for the game.

The TV screen switched to Tim Tebow and several of his Broncos teammates who were kneeling on the sideline, praying in the moments before the kick-off.

Christians on all the teams do that, week after week, game after game, win or lose.

To them, it’s about more than winning or losing; it’s how you play—and pray—the game.

So, I wonder about the candidates—if any of them are football fans. And if they know that God “removes kings and establishes kings” (Daniel 2:21).
