Our Next Christian President
Frank Allnutt

As it frequently does, religion has once again become a presidential campaign issue.

It made headlines recently when Pastor Robert Jeffress of the 10,000-member First Baptist Church in Dallas said candidate Mitt Romney “is not a Christian” and that his Mormon religion is a “cult.”

Then, the World Net Daily web site began promoting a new book by Tricia Erickson, Can Mitt Romney Serve Two Masters? The Mormon Church Versus the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America (WestBow Press, A Division of Thomas Nelson).

Erickson, the daughter of a Mormon bishop, left the family’s religion in her twenties and now says she is a Christian. On the WND web site she asks: “Would you trust the judgment of a man if he truly believes he’s gonna be a god?”

I won’t take up my space and your time to discuss the non-biblical and extra-biblical doctrines of Mormonism. I’ll leave it up to Tricia Erickson, my friend Josh McDowell and other Christian apologists who over the years have done much to expose the out-of-Bible sync doctrines of Mormonism. As for what constitutes an authentic Christian, I have previously posted “What is a Christian?” on my web site.

But I do want to address those who would like to have a Christian president.

First of all, they will get their wish. Kinda.

Now, if my memory serves me well, every president in my lifetime—from FDR to Obama—has professed to be a Christian. They pleased some Christians some of the time and some Christians all the time, but never all Christians all the time.

So now, many Christians, once again, want a Christian in the White House. But on what basis would you vet such a person and vote for them? What is it you might want of a Christian candidate?

Must the Christian president be a man, or is it permissible for a woman to hold the office over men?

Must the Christian president be of a certain denomination? There are an estimated 38,500 “Christian” denominations in America, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormon religion).

Must the Christian president be a synergist or monergist?

Must the Christian president be a pre-millennialist, post-millennialist, or amillennialist?

Must the Christian president be a pre-tribulationalist, mid-tribulationalist, or post-tribulationalist?

Must the Christian president believe America is a Christian nation, or a secular nation, or (gulp) even Mystery Babylon the Great?

Must the Christian president be a Dominionist who will attempt to use the New World Order to usher in God’s kingdom on earth, or believe that the NWO will become the kingdom of the Antichrist and that Jesus will thereafter return to establish His kingdom?

Must a Christian president do what “We the people” want Him to do, or do what His Heavenly Father wants Him to do?

Would a Christian president bring an olive branch of peace and unity to America and the world or, like Jesus, bring a sword of division and judgement? (See Matthew 10:34-38).

I could go on and on, but I’ll limit myself to few more brief questions:

Would a Christian who endeavors to do what Jesus would do even be interested in moving into the Oval Office?

If so, would the majority of Americans elect such a person to be president?

Would even a majority of professing Christians elect such a person?

Would you really vote for a person who wants to do things the way Jesus would?

Barak Obama is a self-described Christian, and all the major GOP candidates profess to be Christians. Who knows if any of them actually would do what Jesus would do?

From all indications, it looks like we’ll end up with another professing Christian president.

The chosen one of the majority of American voters.

But a chosen one of God?

Que sera, sera.

Meanwhile, we Christians are called by Jesus to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33), for we first and foremost are citizens of His holy nation (1 Peter 2:9), and not of this world (John 17:14). And whether America has a good president or a bad one, we are to live righteously (Romans 13, 1 Peter 2:13-20).
