Labor Day:

Who Do You Really Work For?
by Frank Allnutt

Entrepreneurs work for themselves.

Employees of large companies work for one or more supervisors, all of whom report to the CEO.

Some union workers work for their employer, while others answer first to their union.

Contrary to much TV advertising, most companies demand company loyalty over customer loyalty.

Most politicians work for their political party rather than “We the people,” whom by Constitutional authority and oath of office they swear to represent—to work for.

If you work in the executive branch of the federal government, you occupy a position on an organizational chart that, at the very top, shows you work for the President of the United States, whom presently is Barack Obama.

If you are in the military, you are part of a chain of command that has a Commander In Chief, whom presently is Barack Obama.

So, who is your boss? Yourself, a supervisor, a superior officer, the CEO, the people you sell to or serve, the President of the United States...?

I mean, who do you really work for?

I’ve yet to see an organizational chart that names who is ultimately a person’s boss.

But the Bible names them. And there are only two. One is an “acting” boss, and the other is the actual “Boss,” who is autonomous—who is the supreme authority and answers to no one.

The “acting” boss, according to the Bible is Satan, and the autonomous “Boss” is God.

Before we were Christians, Satan was our spiritual father and master. Jesus said to those who did not believe Him: “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father” (John 8:44a). But as Christians, like branches cut from Adam’s family tree and grafted into Christ’s family tree, we became children of God and He is our father. As new-hearted children of God, we have been given a “new spirit” of loving motivation to serve and obey our Heavenly Father (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

As a Christian, you probably agree that you are accountable to God in your personal life. But what about your job? Do you consider yourself to be also accountable to God in your profession or vocation?

How many times have we heard Christians who are political candidates for public office—in order to be approved by man—insist that their faith is strictly personal and has no influence on carrying out the duties of the office they so covet?

But, in choosing to please man, such Christians also place themselves into an illicit affair with Satan by allowing him to be their false master. This is a sin that functionally divides the Christian’s heart and quenches the indwelling Holy Spirit. It comes down to this: When our work does not glorify God, but is performed to please self or someone else instead, it ultimately gives the glory to Satan.

The Apostle Paul gives us this instruction: Whatever you do, do your work heartedly [that is, whole-heartedly, not half-heartedly], as for the Lord rather than for men; knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality” (Colossians 3:23-25).

I photographed a sunrise for the background to Colossians 3:23. This picture is mounted above a doorway I pass through at the beginning of every day.

So, on the occasion of this Labor Day, AD 2011, I beseech you brothers and sisters in Christ, to heed the words of Paul and do whatever you do as for the Lord.
