America: A House Divided

On June 16, 1858, in Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, then a nominee for United States senator, delivered one of his most famous speeches. His message was that “A house divided against itself cannot stand,” in reference to a quote by Jesus Christ, as recorded in Matthew 12:25.
Here is that well-known passage of Lincoln’s speech:
“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new—North as well as South.”
Just as America was at a crossroad then—over slavery vs. freedom—so too is our country at a similar crossroad today. Indeed, we are a house divided between slavery and freedom, and so stand at the same crossroad today as we found ourselves in 1858: a spiritual crossroad. Some people, whether intentionally or unintentionally, want to lead us down a path that ultimately will place us under slavery to the Antichrist and his world order, symbolically called “Mystery Babylon the Great” in the Bible. However, those of us who are Christians want others to join us as Jesus Christ leads us on a path of true freedom that can be traveled only by those who are citizens of the Kingdom of God.
We stand at a governmental crossroad as a nation, at a social crossroad as a people, and at a spiritual crossroad as individuals. Government, as an institution, cannot travel the right path and society as a whole cannot travel the right path; only individuals can make the choice to travel the right path—by following Jesus Christ.
Our mission as Christians is not to repair the world (to “Christianize” Satan’s domain is an absurdity), but to be used of God to rescue people out of the world. Therefore, it is incumbent on those of us who follow Jesus to pray that God might use us to rescue others from the world and thus unite with us as people of the way—people of Jesus, who is the way...and the truth and the life (John 14:6).
While we can and should pray for our nation and our society, let each of us more specifically pray for individuals who are in need of rescue from the world. And let each of us respond to our call to be rescuers by reaching out to those whom God has placed on our hearts.
In so doing we will not foolishly build our house on sand, but wisely on the rock that is Jesus Christ.
